The big loop. In a single day you ride from the sea into the moonscape, over the mountain ridge into the north and back along the west coast. It’s a lot — but by evening you have the whole island in your head.
Set off very early (7–8am). You need the whole day and you want the high ground before the midday cloud.

Along the way
Stops on this ride
- 1
Teide-Nationalpark
ViewpointThe high point, early in the day: the lava plain, the Roques de García, Teide over it all.
- 2
Mirador de Chipeque (TF-24)
PhotoOn the ridge: a sea of cloud left and right, Teide in your mirrors. Stop briefly, take it in.
- 3
La Laguna
BreakUNESCO old town. A real lunch break: eat, drink, stretch your legs before you press on.
- 4
Garachico
CultureA coastal town shaped by a lava flow, with natural sea pools. A photo stop on the Atlantic.
- 5
Santiago del Teide
FuelA hub in the west. Fuel up, a quick coffee, then the last leg back to the south.
- 6
Costa Adeje (Ziel)
BreakBack at the sea, 24° and evening light. One day, a whole island.
Watch out here
- A long ride with big swings in altitude and temperature: 24° at the sea, 8–12° on Teide. Layers and breaks are non-negotiable.
- Fuel discipline: there’s no fuel station for a long way across the Cañadas and over the ridge. Fill up before the climb.
- It’s a question of stamina. 230km with plenty of bend work tires you out. Plan real breaks, never ride into the switchbacks tired.
How the ride feels
Up early. From the south coast west on the TF-1, then up into Teide National Park, best via the TF-21 through Vilaflor, while the morning view is still clear. The moonscape, the Roques de García, Teide against a blue sky: that’s the high point, and you have it early in the day, before the cloud arrives. Start with a full tank, there’s nothing up there for a long way.
On over the TF-24, the Dorsal, the ridge towards La Laguna. This road is a dream: sweeping bends, a sea of cloud on both sides, Teide in your mirrors. A real break in La Laguna or La Orotava: stretch your legs, eat, drink. Then down into the green north on the TF-5, past banana plantations, the Atlantic on your left.
The way back runs along the north coast towards Garachico and Icod, then over the TF-82 through Santiago del Teide and back to the south. The western flank is drier, barer, with a view of the sea and of La Gomera. Plan the temperature work: you’ll change kit completely several times this day, from a T-shirt at the sea to a windproof at 2,000 metres and back again. If you want to feel the whole island in one go, this is exactly the loop to ride.
