From the warm south into the high mountains in 90 minutes. You ride through the highest pine forest in Europe, then the moonscape opens up: black lava, ochre rock, and Teide towering over it all. This is the ride you came to Tenerife for.
Set off early, 8–9am. Clear views in the morning; by afternoon cloud often rolls over the Cañadas.

Watch out here
- It gets cold on the Teide plateau: 24° at sea level, 8–12° up top. Pack layers and a windproof shell.
- The TF-21 from Vilaflor is the main tourist artery: convoys of rental cars dawdling through the bends. Be patient, never push.
- Altitude tires you out. Drink plenty and ride defensively above 2,000m. Your reactions fade without you noticing.
How the ride feels
Start at Costa Adeje. West a short way on the TF-1, then at Arona pick up the TF-51, which screws itself up to Vilaflor in tight, cleanly surfaced switchbacks. The tarmac is good, the bends medium-fast and well sighted. This is where you can find a rhythm. With every step of altitude the air turns cooler and more resinous: from around 1,400 metres the pinar, the pine forest, begins, smelling of warm wood.
Above Vilaflor the TF-51 becomes the TF-21. The forest thins, and suddenly you’re in Las Cañadas del Teide — the old caldera. It turns wide and still here. Black and red lava flows, frozen for centuries, with the pale pumice fields of the Paisaje Lunar in between. The road is broad and fast, but don’t let it carry you away: the park is protected land, and the Guardia Civil like to sit at the viewpoints with a speed gun. Every stop at the Parador and the Roques de García earns its keep.
Head back over the TF-24, the "Dorsal", the ridge to La Laguna, or return via the TF-21 to Vilaflor if you want the bends the other way round. Allow time: it’s cold up top, and you’ll be putting layers on and peeling them off constantly. The best café con leche of the day waits in Vilaflor, on the village square, before or after the moonscape.
