What to look out for when you rent a motorbike on Tenerife
Tenerife is anything but flat: in a single day you climb from sea level to over 2,000 metres up at Teide. Pick your bike for the ride, not for the photo. A 125cc scooter is plenty for the towns and coast around Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje; for the twisty mountain roads you'll want a naked bike or an adventure bike; and two-up with luggage, touring comfort pays off. Before you book, always check the licence class, minimum age (usually 21 to 23), deposit and whether an International Driving Permit is required. It varies from one rental office to the next. The road matters just as much as the bike. Plan realistically: Tenerife is slower than the map looks, because nearly every road bends.
