Where a scooter is the better choice
A 125 isn’t a small motorcycle. It’s a different tool.
Good for: the coast roads in the south, hopping between Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, shopping, beach days, parking right outside the door. If you’re staying a week and don’t plan to circle the island, you need nothing else.
Borderline: the TF-51 up to Vilaflor, the climb to Teide, a headwind on the motorway. A 125 will do it, slowly, with the throttle wide open.
Not suitable: the full island loop in a day. There simply isn’t enough in reserve.

The licence question, and it catches people out
In much of Europe a car licence alone does not entitle you to ride a 125 abroad, and Tenerife is where people find that out at the counter.
What works: a full A1 category on your licence. That’s recognised across the EU and EEA without argument.
What usually doesn’t: national add-ons that let car-licence holders ride a 125 at home. The UK CBT is a domestic training certificate, not a licence category. Germany has an equivalent domestic extension. Neither travels. Outside the issuing country you are riding without a valid category and without insurance cover, so we advise against it even where a rental office accepts it.
Spain does allow its own residents to ride a 125 after three years on a category B licence. That rule attaches to Spanish licences, not to visitors.
If your licence shows A1, you’re fine. If it doesn’t, book a scooter you’re actually entitled to ride, or take a car. The licence guide goes through the categories in detail.
Helmet, rain and the small stuff
A helmet comes with the bike at every rental office we work with. Try it on before you ride off and ask for a different one if it presses. That’s completely normal and costs nothing. A second helmet for a pillion usually costs extra.
Bring your own gloves and a rain jacket. You’ll barely touch them in the south. In the north you will.
Ask explicitly for a lock. Scooter theft isn’t a big problem on Tenerife, but insurance often only pays out if the vehicle was locked.
And the obvious one that still catches people: helmets are compulsory in Spain without exception, including for the two kilometres to the beach.
Licence and age
For a scooter you need AM, A1. The minimum age is usually 21 to 23, depending on the rental office and the machine. We ask for you.

- What does a scooter cost per day on Tenerife?
- The price list on this page starts at €36 a day. From a week most rental offices lower the daily rate, and from a month considerably.
- Can I ride a 125 on a car licence?
- Only with a genuine A1 category. National add-ons for car-licence holders, such as the UK CBT or the German B196 code, count only in the country that issued them. In Spain you would be riding without a valid category and without insurance cover.
- Will a 125 make it up to Teide?
- Yes, but slowly. Around 2,000 vertical metres in one go is hard work. For the climb, more engine is a lot more relaxing.
- Is a helmet included?
- Yes, at every rental office we work with. A second helmet for a passenger usually costs extra; bring gloves and rain gear yourself.
