Why riders like the north
The best roads on the island are in the north. The Anaga cloud forest is a web of hairpins through laurel woodland with no equivalent in the south. The TF-21 from La Orotava up to Teide is the prettier of the two climbs.
On top of that: from Puerto de la Cruz the island loop is doable in a day, because you start halfway round rather than at the edge.
The weather is the catch
The north sits in the trade winds, and they bring cloud. Between November and February drizzly days are normal, sometimes several in a row. This isn’t central European all-day rain, but the road is wet and visibility on the mountain is poor.
In practice: pack waterproofs, and the tyres should have tread. Ask about it explicitly at handover. It’s one of the points on the handover checklist.
If you travel in winter and want to avoid rain, rent in the south and ride up to Anaga for a day trip.
